This striking work by Luis González Palma was made in collaboration with Segura Publishing Company, AZ. A copy of this artwork is in the permanent collection of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Made with gold leaf, kodalith, and printmaking processes, it is essentially an edition-based collage. It brings various practices and materials together into a harmonizing diptych. An early work, it engages symbols critical to the artists foundational practice- the rose, the birthday cake, the crown of thorns. Less frequently used, the helicopter is not singular in its type-appearance and is a somewhat jarring inclusion. It adds a strange gravity to the work that invites us to make more associations, personal, collective. Work from this period addressed themes of immigration, colonization, duality, and the disappeared. Beautiful, fragile, critical- artwork is an accessible and meaningful addition to a growing collection.
